He offers insight that is consistent and makes sense (unlike Maneha, again). From a mechanical/content volume standpoint, he also speaks a lot and interjects frequently during conversations (unlike Maneha). For one, he's a wonderfully written character created by the lead narrative designer of the game (and, incidentally, the guy who created Eder), and the one dude whose arc in WM2 gets proper foreshadowing in WM1. On the other end of the spectrum, however, there is Zahua who is a great companion to have throughout both parts of WM. I mean, I might agree that someone like Maneha is poorly realized, especially seeing how she barely acknowledges the large swaths of plot that are focused on her deity and therefore should be of immediate concern to her. None of these people are with you for the long game, but that doesn't mean they're inherently bad characters. It's not really a fault of the companions themselves, who - despite their shortcomings - are all very clearly tied into the driving theme/question of the expansion. However, this is a problem with the expansion's format, length, limited resources, and the unfortunate split of its content. It's true that the new companions have arcs that may feel "meh" - they're too brief, too abrupt, and don't have enough time to breathe. Since my countryman above appears to be an overtly cynical man who may or may not be Edwin, I'll offer a different perspective: So, recruiting adventurers early in the game is a good investment, plus a time saver since your reserve characters gained XP and leveled up.Zahua is just a junkie hobo who has a slightly longer personal quest about taking shrooms. I mostly struggle with which armor goes with whom and how much DR people need for their roles. Then they become less applicable when you get sanguine or scars or exceptional plate. Ofcourse, you could just spend 2,500cp later in the game to get a level 10 custom character of your choice, but if you are planning on recruiting the maximum 8 characters, then it's a potential save of up to 20,000cp. Companion armors are good up until you get full plate. Just sell extra loot, and whenever you have 250cp, hire another one. If you can only recruit one or two at the start, don't worry. That or they are doing their own adventuring while you're gone (who knows). Ofcourse this is a game, so we are only allowed 6 in a party, but that's just the reason why "reserve" characters still get XP (they are always with you canon-wise). Canon-wise, you are probably travelling with more than 6 people with you, since in real life you can have an army behind you following you. Preferably, a barbarian, monk and a rogue, since none of your companions have those job classes. Xoti (pronounced shoti) is a female human monk and priest, and a recruitable companion in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. If you are planning on playing the game with a custom party later in the game (or a mix of companions or custom characters), then hire as many adventurers as you can, even when you are not going to use them immediately. ![]()
